Based on strong customer feedback, Microsoft has decided to continue supporting driver update synchronization to WSUS servers. Their original plan to end this support in April 2025 has officially been postponed indefinitely.
The Current State of Driver Synchronization
Although WSUS is a deprecated service, deprecation simply means it’s no longer being actively developed, it doesn’t mean it’s gone or even going anytime soon. The service will eventually (10+ years) be retired and removed in a future release (long into the future), but for now, it’s still available in Server 2025 and fully functional and supported until the end of support for Server 2025 which will be in late 2034.
Originally, Microsoft planned to remove WSUS driver synchronization, believing that many organizations were already shifting to cloud-based driver management. However, after receiving significant customer feedback, they’ve revised that decision.
Next Steps
Effective immediately, Microsoft is postponing the removal of driver synchronization support in WSUS. That means it is business as usual. Organizations can continue to sync driver updates from the Windows Update service and import them from the Microsoft Update Catalog just as before. Microsoft is now working on a revised retirement timeline and has stated that it will continue to evaluate customer needs before making any future changes.
This gives organizations more time to plan, adapt, or continue using their current WSUS setup without disruption.
