Microsoft Launches On-Premises Unified Update Platform To Control Windows Updates

This summer, Microsoft has released a new Unified Update Platform, or UUP, that allows commercial customers to have on-premises update management capabilities. Unified Update Platform was designed to simplify and streamline Windows 11 and its upgrades by enhancing organization through employee devices with management tools. These management tools include Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), and Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM). Here is what server administrators should know about Microsoft’s Unified Update Platform.

What Exactly Does UUP Do?

The initial test runs for Microsoft’s Unified Update Platform were performed in 2016. Microsoft’s goal was to reduce the size of Windows 10 feature updates by up to 35%. According to Microsoft, the new UUP service helps IT administrators manage features and quality updates on Windows devices. While UUP is currently private for businesses, in early 2023 all new Windows 11 updates through WSUS will be available in UUP format.

How UUP Can Benefit You

According to Microsoft, their Unified Update Platform can help to reduce additional work and administrative tasks that were once required to be performed manually for maintaining Windows 10 and 11. It will now be possible to upgrade your operating system through one simple reboot. What’s also beneficial is that IT administrators no longer have to use “media-based task sequences” for Windows Upgrades. Overall, UUP should work to make the administrative experience easier and more efficient.

How WAM Can Help

For those of us who have already been using WAM (WSUS Automated Maintenance), a majority of administrative tasks have already been automated. However, UUP will be a welcomed addition, especially while using it in tandem with WAM. If you as an administrator choose to both utilize WAM and UUP, your system’s administrative tasks will be extremely efficient and simple for you, allowing you to prioritize what’s important rather than fussing over minute administrative tasks and details.
